What the Cyclospora Outbreak Can Teach Us About the Future of Farming

News of the current Cyclospora outbreak has a lot of people asking the same question: How does something like this happen?
Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that can contaminate fresh produce through contaminated water or poor sanitation somewhere along the growing, harvesting, or processing chain. Once someone eats contaminated produce, they can experience severe diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, and dehydration that can last for weeks if left untreated.
The important thing to understand is that the problem isn't the produce itself, it's everything that happens before that food reaches your plate. Like many foodborne illnesses, Cyclospora reminds us that every step between the farm and the consumer matters.
I don't look at outbreaks like this and think, "How do we grow more food?" I ask, "How do we build food systems that make something like this less likely to happen in the first place?" That's an important distinction.
There is no such thing as a farming system with zero risk. Whether you're growing on two acres or two thousand, food safety must be taken seriously. But there is a significant difference between managing a local farm serving one community and managing an industrial supply chain moving produce across an entire country. The larger the operation becomes, the more complicated the system becomes.
Produce from multiple fields, or even multiple farms, is often washed, packed, processed, and shipped together. By the time a problem is discovered, that same batch may already be sitting in grocery stores hundreds or thousands of miles away. Investigators then have the difficult job of working backward through a long, complicated supply chain to figure out where the contamination occurred. That complexity is one of the biggest challenges facing industrial agriculture.
At Jubilee Farms, we're intentionally building something different. Our goal has never been to compete with industrial agriculture by producing the most food. Our goal is to produce exceptional food while maintaining complete visibility over every step of the process. Because we operate on a smaller scale, we know what is growing, when it was harvested, who handled it, and where it went. Our processing happens close to where the food is grown, and our distribution stays within our local community.
That shorter supply chain makes a tremendous difference. If there is ever a quality issue, we can identify it quickly, isolate it, and respond.
People often think buying local is only about supporting small businesses or reducing transportation. Those are worthwhile benefits, but there's another advantage that doesn't get discussed enough: transparency. When your food travels a few miles instead of a few thousand, it's much easier to understand where it came from and how it was handled. Fewer transfers, fewer facilities, and fewer people handling the product creates fewer opportunities for mistakes to go unnoticed.
Controlled environment agriculture strengthens that advantage even further. We monitor water quality, nutrient delivery, sanitation, and environmental conditions every day. Nothing is left to chance, and every crop is grown with consistency in mind. It's a level of oversight that's difficult to achieve when production is spread over vast areas and multiple facilities.
The recent Cyclospora outbreak shouldn't make people afraid to eat fresh produce. It should encourage us to think more carefully about the systems producing our food. At Jubilee Farms, we believe the future of agriculture isn't simply growing more. It's growing smarter.
